Jackett: No More Excuses

Last updated : 26 August 2004 By Richard Evans
After heavy midweek criticism from Swansea fans, Kenny Jackett has vowed to turn the Welsh club's fortunes around and start gaining results on the pitch. With two fixtures in 72 hours, bank holiday weekend provides the ideal platform for Jackett on which to build a successful run of form...starting with a trip to the Abbey Stadium on Saturday to face Cambridge United.

Last season was an average season for Cambridge. Player-Manager John Taylor found himself surplus to requirements in March, after Cambridge found themselves struggling in the lower regions of the basement league. In a startling appointment, Cambridge announced that ex-Cameroon and PSG manager Claude LeRoy would take over the reigns from the end of the month, stating that it was the "most exciting appointment in the club's history". Cambridge eventually enjoyed a decent run of form and pulled themselves up into the mid-table positions.

Frenchman Herve Renard is now in charge of United. Originally installed as LeRoy's assistant manager, Renard has now taken over the manager's position full-time following LeRoy's unsuprising decision to pursue his current position in the media. Renard's Cambridge started the season with a 2-1 defeat at freshly relegated Wycombe, before grabbing four points in two home fixtures against Leyton Orient and Shrewsbury. Last Saturday saw them steal a point in a 0-0 draw at Southend, while like the Swans, Cambridge were knocked out of the League Cup by Championship opposition - losing 1-0 at Watford.

Therefore, the U's currently lie just one point above Swansea heading into Saturday's League Two clash. The last time that these two sides met, was in March, in a tight 1-0 Swansea victory at the Abbey, with the only goal of the game coming from Izzy Iriekpen. Jackett would definitely settle for a repeat result as his position at the club comes under ever more increasing pressure.

And so Bank Holiday weekend approaches with possibly two of the biggest matches in Kenny Jackett's career on the way. There could be little opposition to his dismissal should Swansea finish this weekend point-less, but supporters will be hoping that Jackett can turn his sides early poor-run around - starting with three points at the Abbey.

Team News:

Cambridge could be without Shane Tudor and John Turner after both sustained injuries in their 1-0 defeat at Watford. Otherwise, Renard has virtually the same squad to choose from as in midweek.

Swansea's Kevin Austin is suspended following his sending off against QPR in midweek. Garry Monk and Kris O'Leary have both shaken off minor knocks and have been declared fit for the fixture while club-captain Roberto Martinez looks set to be left out of the 16-man squad once again.
