Jackett Hints At Martinez Exit

Last updated : 13 August 2004 By Richard Evans
Instead of stating that club captain Martinez's future at Swansea is secure, Kenny Jackett today hinted that the Spaniard is poised to leave the South Wales club in the near future. In an interview with the Western Mail, Jackett stated "I'm not necessarily saying I would consider letting him go. What I am saying is I will speak to Roberto first". Jackett went on to drop several other hints, that all pointed towards Martinez leaving South Wales for good. Supporters will hope that this is just more media hype, as an on-form Martinez is capable of walking into just about every side in the division.

Roberto Martinez became a fans' favourite when he lead Swansea to safety in the 2002/03 season, after joining in January from Walsall. The Spaniard was definitely the driving force in the midfield during Swansea's recovery, but suffered last season with several injuries and poor form.

The 2004/campaign has hardly started as Roberto Martinez would have wished. Substituted half-way through the second half during Swansea's season opener with Northampton, Martinez was left out of the Rochdale squad on Tuesday night altogether, prompting many to speculate about his future. Today's comments from Jackett will hardly instill the club captain with confidence about his future and Monday's talks could well prove crucial.
