A pulsating game of end to end action saw Southend and Swansea sharing the spoils at Roots Hall with a 1-1 draw.

Goals from Kevin Nugent and Southend's Lawrie Dudfield ensured both teams went home happy - Southend clawing themselves further away from the relegation zone and Swansea clinging onto their play off hopes.

New manager Steve Tilson looks to have given his players a new sense of self belief and the Blues totally dominated the first half.

Their best chance in the opening 45 minutes came early on with Swansea's makeshift defence clearly unsettled. Duncan Jupp's through ball found Dudfield whose super first time control set him up for a driving run and shot which skidded wide just past the far post.

A mistake from Brian Murphy three minutes later allowed Dudfield to get his head on Leon Constantine's cross only for the keeper to redeem himself with a smart reflex stop.

The Swans best chance came from Jonathan Coates, getting onto Paul Connor's chest down and lashing the ball over from 25 yards out.

Swansea's goal in the 64th minute came against the run of play, Paul Connor's flick on found the boot of Kevin Nugent who steered the ball home from six yards out.

But Swansea's lead lasted just three minutes. With the keeper not coming off his line Brian Murphy allowed Drewe Broughton to head the ball into the path of Dudfield who put the ball into the back of the net.

The game sparked into life in the 76th minute with the sending off, with the hapless Murphy trying to clear a bouncing ball he was deemed to have handled outside the box.

Down to ten men the Swans nearly won it. With just two minutes remaining Lewis Hunt deflected Andy Robinson's long range effort and Darryl Flahavan could only watch as the ball went inches wide of the left hand post.

Southend boss Steve Tilson was pleased with his team's showing and felt the Shrimpers were unlucky not to get all three points.

"I am upset we have not won the game after our first half performance. We should have been out of sight, but having gone a goal behind a draw is always a good point."
