Boston United vacated basement spot in Division Three with a slender success over fellow strugglers Swansea. A lone strike by Simon Weatherstone proved decisive on a night when city had Jamie Wood sent off while Boston also missed a late penalty.

All the worthy chances in the first 20 minutes went Boston's way with an early shot by Paul Ellender being followed up by on target efforts from Neil Redfearn and Steve Burton. But all were comfortably held by Roger Freestone.

In addition, a near post header by Jamie Cook from a Simon Weatherstone corner bobbled wide of the City goal.

Little was seen of Swansea as an attacking force in the first 25 minutes. But at that point, only a fine smothering save by Paul Bastock prevented Wood from breaking the deadlock.

Boston, though got the goal their efforts deserved on 36 minutes when Weatherstone swivelled well to fire home after Burton had flicked on a Ray Warburton free kick.

In the second half Swansea twice went close to levelling the score with near misses for Matt Murphy and James Thomas while on 63 minutes Burton hit a shot on the turn inches over the City bar after a Simon Wheatherstone corner had caused panic in the visitors defence.

Their was a flashpoint in the 78th minute when Wood was dismissed for swinging a punch at Matt Hocking in an incident out keeping with the general low key tempo of the match.

Boston should have doubled their lead on 82 minutes when Cook was tripped in the area by David Theobald . But Simon Weatherstone's fierce spot kick was superbly pushed aside by Freestone.

And after the match there was a bombshell for Boston when acting manager Neil Thompson quit claiming his position being undermined, particularly with the on going uncertainty over suspended manager Steve Evans.

He said: "It has got nothing to do with the playing side. I have my dignity and i leave with the club having moved off the bottom of the table. It's just that things have become untenable."

Meanwhile City boss Nick Cusack said he also expected to leave his job: "I don't know fully what is happening, but let's say I expect to be in a meeting tomorrow. I just hope that whoever comes in will get success for Swansea City."
