Swans Crush Barry

Last updated : 21 July 2004 By Richard Evans
Swansea continued their 100% pre-season record on Tuesday night, with a 2-0 victory away at Barry Town. First half goals from youngster Matthew Roberts and James Thomas gave the Swans a comfortable half-time lead, which they failed to extend before the final whistle. A number of first team players were absent, including Andy Robinson, Gary Monk, Kristian O'Leary and Kevin Austin.

First Half:
Murphy

Courtney - McDonald - Jones - Davies

Roberts - Evans - Corbisiero - Pritchard

Thomas - Oli

Jackett used the friendly to take a look at some of his youth players, many of whom had never been thrown into the first-team before. Oli and Corbisiero looked to follow up excellent individual performances against Worcester while there was a first appearance for trialist Duane Courtney at the back.

Just eight minutes into the match, Matthew Roberts (Stuart's younger brother) headed home a Pritchard cross to give Kenny's men a 1-0 lead. The Swans then doubled their lead on the half-hour mark, when Davies' shot was deflected into the path of the forgotten James Thomas - who duly dispatched with ease. Barry failed to muster any real attempt on goal and this young Swans side looked extremely comfortable.

Second Half:

Murphy

Corbisiero - Tate - Jones - Ricketts

Forbes - Martinez - Fisken - Britton

Thomas - Connor

Despite not being able to extend their 2-0 lead, the second half involving some more familiar Swansea names was all one-way traffic. Thomas and Corbisiero both remained on the field until the last 20 minutes, when they were replaced by Pritchard and Evans (substituted at half time), while Stuart Jones and Brian Murphy managed a full 90 minutes.

Swansea quite literally produced one shot after another, with the majority of opportunities falling to Paul Connor. Connor's best opportunity came in the form of an acrobatic volley, that was pushed out for a corner with around 20 minutes to play, while Leon Britton fired against the woodwork soon after. Murphy did have one spectacular save to make, eventually proving to be Barry's only shot on target. However, from the resulting corner, Murphy dropped an unchallenged cross - summing up last the Irishman's 03/04 season.

Another easy victory for Swansea, although the quality of the opposition must be taken into account. Dennis Oli was extremely quiet in the first half, while youngsters Matthew Roberts and Antonio Corbisiero both gave decent accounts of themselves. The latter must surely be on the fringes of breaking into Kenny Jackett's first team based on recent performances.

Both Ricketts and Forbes performed well once again despite a lack of goals. The fact that two strong Swansea sides have failed to score against weaker opposition may worry Swansea supporters, but surely it is only a matter of time before the likes of Forbes and Connor start hitting the net again.
