Scunthorpe manager - It wasn't a penalty

City were outclassed by their North Lincolnshire opponents at Glanford Park today, and the 2-0 scoreline could have been much heavier.

23 minutes into the game Jason Smith was judged to have brought down Martin Carruthers by referee Steve Baines - who himself was a Scunthorpe United captain in the 1980's.

Carruthers dusted himself off to convert the spot kick and give the Iron the lead.

"I didn't think it was a penalty, the referee did and I'll take that," admitted Laws tonight, "The second goal on its own was worthy of winning the game."

The second goal Laws refers to was scored by youngster Matthew Sparrow, which saw the ball sprayed across the pitch mesmerically before Sparrow cut inside from the right and put the ball in the top corner from outside the area with his left foot.

Roger Freestone didn't have a hope in hell of stopping the ball.

"It was a terrific three points, we said before the game that the law of averages suggest that they are going to win an away game sooner rather than later so we had to be at our best," added Laws.

"In the first half we were by far the better side, we took the bull by the horns and played some forceful football."
