Preview: Bridgwater Town v Swansea

Last updated : 18 July 2005 By Richard Evans
With Swansea's pre-season campaign now well and truly underway, focus shifts towards Tuesday's encounter with non-league minnows Bridgwater Town. The Toolstation Premier League side, otherwise known as the Western Premier, will host Tuesday's friendly at the cosy and bizarrely named Westonzoyland Road stadium and will be hoping to upset Swansea's preparations for the new season by gaining an unlikely victory. But what else should Kenny's men expect from Tuesday night's encounter?

Although the current club has only been in existence since 1984, Bridgwater Town can be traced right back to 1898 when "Bridgwater AFC" was orignally formed, although it was forced to disband due to financial problems just four years later. The club was reformed under numerous different names over the next half century, including the plain "Bridgwater" and the "Crown Dynamos" before Bridgwater Town was re-established in 1948. The club enjoyed a 34-year spell in the Western divisions and were drawn against league opposition in Bristol Rovers and Luton Town in the FA Cup, before being accepted into the Midland Division of the Southern Premier in 1982. This move was to prove the club's downfall as increased travelling costs and poor support caused the club to go bankrupt just two years later.

The current club was re-formed in 1984 a
nd currently finds itself back in the Western Premier division, where it won the Western cup competition last season. Although the club is a relative unknown in British football, many Swansea supporters will be familiar with Bridgwater manager Trevor Senior, who enjoyed successful spells at Chelsea and Reading in the 80's and 90's. The club's playing staff is mainly made up for players that have never progressed past local level, although numerous were considered for England Schoolboys honours in their youth. 38-year old assistant player/manager Tony Diaz has represented England at U-19 level, before enjoying spells at Weymouth, Cheltenham, Bashley and Dorchester Town. Like the Swans, Bridgwater Town also began their pre-season campaign on Saturday but were beaten 3-1 by fellow non-league minnows Wimbourne Town.

Jackett is set to take 22 players to Westonzoyland Road on Tuesday and will use them in the same format as he did at Merthyr on Saturday, with two seperate eleven's set to compete in each half. The match will be a fantastic chance for Adebayo Akinfenwa to impress after a sub-standard first impression at Penydarren Park over the weekend, whilst trialists Stuart Edwards and Owain Tudor Jones are both likely to play a half each.

Full match report will be online on Tuesday evening...you'd be MAD to miss it!
