De Vries also broke the club-record 22 clean sheets set by Roger Freestone in the 1999/00 season.

Newcastle's Steve Harper and Nottingham Forest's Lee Camp were also contenders for the award.

In League One, the accolade went to Norwich City's Fraser Forster for 22 shut-outs in 39 appearances, while Notts County keeper Kasper Schmeichel took the honours in League Two with 24 clean sheets in 48 appearances.

"The award gives the League the chance to recognise the vital contribution that goalkeepers make every single week," said Football League chairman Greg Clarke.

"Their efforts influence the overall success of the team and each of these winners has had an outstanding season and fully deserves this recognition."
